Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt

Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is one of the nation’s leading children’s hospitals. It is a nationally recognized provider of pediatric health care services, currently with 10 specialty programs ranked by U.S. News & World Report magazine in its “Best Children’s Hospitals” issue. Their website was outdated, didn’t communicate the superiority and value of Vanderbilt’s pediatric health care services, and desperately needed a new content management system.

The Children’s Hospital approached me to lead the overall creative direction, UX design process, and collaborate with the strategic marketing and development departments to create a responsive desktop and mobile redesign of their website.

Below showcases highlights of the project. For case studies and more in-depth analysis of my work, my leadership approach to managing design teams, and how I manage feedback from key stakeholders and C-Suite executives, please reach out for a comprehensive walk through.

This project started with numerous design thinking workshops and card sorting exercises with all stakeholders across the children’s department. I’m a believer in short design thinking workshops where some of the highlights for me that comes out of these sessions is having people viewing a problem from a different perspective and everyone having a better understanding of the objectives and outcomes of large projects like this one.

One new popular feature that derived from our workshops was the after hours clinics. After hours clinics is one of the most frequently visited pages on the site. It is consistently in the top 5 pages viewed which ultimately led to us concluding that this is a service that is highly valued by the patient and sought out.

New After Hours Feature

After digging deeper, we even realized most people accessing the after hours information was actually happening after hours, which as a parent, makes sense. Parents were not in their spare time coming to the after hours part of the website for the joy of it, they were coming here because they needed to know which clinic is open, the nearest one, and at that moment, not a minute less. Based on understanding that urgency, we created a new feature right on the homepage that allowed quick access to our after hour clinics, geolocated and up to the minute, live alerts giving the parent with a tap of a button, easy access to everything they need so they can focus on getting to the right clinic that’s open.
