Jolt

The only platform that incentivizes, supports and rewards fitness—every step of the way. A future where there is one holistic fitness ecosystem made possible by blockchain. Where each and every one of us can take true ownership of our fitness activity data— and reap the rewards. After this startup raised a successful seed round with their vision, we were tasked with the question, how do we create a holistic fitness ecosystem (made possible by the blockchain) which allows users to earn digital tokens that can then be spent in the marketplace?

My role was to work closely with the cofounders of Jolt and their advisory board to create a mobile experience as well as a marketing site. As product design lead and research, I was responsible for the overall creative direction and UX process across our team. What intrigued me the most about this startup and their vision, was the chance for me to get a better understanding of blockchain and work with experts to create our very own fitness application built on the blockchain.

Below showcases highlights of the project. For case studies and more in-depth analysis of my work, my leadership approach to managing design teams, and how I manage feedback from key stakeholders and C-Suite executives, please reach out for a comprehensive walk through.

When I took on this project, I quickly realized there are two parts to this. Part 1 focused on incentivizing and rewarding fitness, where the more you participate in the ecosystem, the more you benefit—physically and financially. This is where blockchain technology and cryptocurrency make it possible for individuals to realize the true economic value of their movement. Part 2 is understanding blockchain and the role it plays in this ecosystem.

Let’s start with Part 2. Our team spent months white boarding, sketching, diagrams and concept work while collaborating with blockchain developers and product stakeholders. The goal was to get a better understanding of “Why blockchain for us?” and how the Jolt Architecture will play a crucial role in verifying a fitness activity. I learned how algorithms are built by being apart of the dev team working on an algorithm designed to validate and reward fitness and wellness activities utilizing a combination of machine learning and verification/authentication protocols. We called this Proof of Sweat. Designed to properly verify activities performed by users so as to ensure the system was not cheated, and to implement, learn and adjust the Jolt incentivization framework that will determine how many tokens to distribute for each verified activity.

User flows and personas

Now back to Part 1, creating a mobile experience focused on incentivizing and rewarding fitness. We started with user flows, and then some qualitative research around the creation of user personas. We identified four key Jolt users from our user testing in the field: the Fitness Activity Performer, the Personal Trainer, the Merchant/Service Provider, and Payers/Governments/Charities.

Wireframes and prototyping

As we were getting in a good place with the user flows and personas, started in parallel paths with wireframes, mainly low fidelity, to bring this experience to life and then leveraging InVision to prototype in order to share with stakeholders and the dev team.
